Fuel and Oil Tank Decommissioning

If your domestic or commercial oil tank is nearing the end of its functional life and needs to be replaced, you’ll need to have it decommissioned.

Decommissioning a tank involves making the tank inoperative. Our experienced, OFTEC trained team uses several methods to decommission commercial oil tanks of all sizes, ranging from full tank removal to tank cleaning and filling using materials such as RG22 foam and concrete.

As specialists in domestic and commercial tank decommissioning and removal, we’re here to make the process as simple as possible. For more information, please continue reading below or contact us now on 0800 799 9739.

Oil Tank Contents Analysis

Before we decommission your oil tank, it’s important to sample the liquid that’s stored inside the tank. If you no longer need your oil tank, the value of the oil or other fuel types stores inside can often significantly offset the cost of decommissioning.

If your oil tank has been left to sit for several years, it’s possible that the material inside could be affected. In either case, our team will prepare a full plan for disposing of any oil and hazardous materials recovered from your tanks.

Removal of Hazardous Materials

Our experienced team will remove the contents of your oil tank and store them safely as part of the decommissioning process. Any and all waste oil that can’t be transferred to another tank will be safely disposed of following all environmental regulations.

If you need to decommission one of several oil tanks, our team can potentially transfer the oil to a second tank.

Our Tank Decommissioning Process

We specialise in the decommissioning of residential, commercial and industrial fuel oil tanks of all sizes. Our typical oil tank decommissioning process involves the following steps:

  • Visiting your site. Before we can start decommissioning your tank, we’ll visit your site and complete a site survey form. During this step, we’ll look into your tank’s history and the type of liquids that were or are stored inside.
  • Quotation. You’ll receive a full quotation for the tank decommissioning process. We’ll compare all of the available options and choose the most efficient, cost-effective option to make sure you don’t pay more than you need to.
  • Planning. We’ll plan the entire decommissioning process, making sure to cause as little disruption to your day-to-day routine as possible. We offer a range of decommissioning options, including options that allow you to reuse your tank in the future if needed.
  • Removal of liquids. Our OFTEC trained team will remove any liquids, residue and gas from your tank. You’ll receive a gas free certificate, as well as a consignment note for all liquids removed from the tank.We work with a wide range of different fuels, including kerosene, red diesel and gas oil.
  • Tank filling or removal. Depending on your needs, we’ll either recommend filling in your unused tank with concrete or RG22 foam. Using RG22 foam means that, if required, you can potentially reuse your tank in the future. In some cases, our team might recommend removing your unused tank from your site, such as if you plan to replace it with a newer, working fuel oil tank.

After this process is completed, we’ll provide you with a certificate of decommissioning informing you that your tank has been completely decommissioned and is no longer usable.
